Most muscle strains are overuse injuries that result when the muscle is stretched without being properly warmed up. Kind of like pulling a rubber band too far. The most important aspect of shoulder management is knowing how your shoulder works. The shoulder consists of 4 main joints: sternoclavicular (between the sternum and the collar bone), acromioclavicular (between the shoulder blade and the collar bone), glenohumeral (between the humerus and the shoulder blade) and the scapulothoracic (a floating joint between the shoulder blade and ribs). The shoulder joint is susceptible to injury due to its entire dependence on non bony connections for its integrity.

One must be very careful when it comes to choosing exercises you can do with rotator cuff injury particularly with the use of weights. The popping feeling or the stinging pain on your shoulder may be an indication that there is something wrong with your self-prescribed exercise.
